About this course

Welcome to the Come Walk With Us course, which is a cultural education program delivered in partnership between the University of Tasmania and Reconciliation Tasmania.

This Come Walk With Us program is an innovative cultural learning opportunity that walks participants through the timeline of the range of government policies that affected the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. The program also incorporates an experiential exercise 'from the shore' demonstrating the impact of the arrival of Europeans, convicts and livestock on the traditional life and home of the First Tasmanians.

This program has been developed in consultation with Aboriginal people across Tasmania and celebrates diversity, by fostering broader understanding of cultural values and practices for and from Tasmania.

How you will learn

The program consists of a 3-hour facilitated workshop to enable participants to easily interact and engage in the learning in a safe and non-intimidating environment. A list of recommended readings and/or additional resources will be made available should participants choose to extend their learning in the subject matter.

There are no assessments associated with this course and all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the conclusion of the course.

Who should do this course?

Come Walk With Us is a foundational three-hour cultural education program that does not require participants to have prior knowledge about Tasmanian Aboriginal history, health status and culture.

What you will learn

  • Develop your knowledge of the determinants of health and well-being and identity of Aboriginal cultures

  • Enhance your ability to communicate effectively with different Aboriginal cultures

  • Extend your understanding of the impact that past policies have had on Aboriginal people - past and present

Reconciliation Tasmania

Reconciliation Tasmania is an independent, not for profit organisation that celebrates the Aboriginal cultural traditions that underpin their long connection to country. They remain committed to fostering a greater understanding by all Tasmanians of our shared history, to strengthen reconciliation between our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.
